Assign E or $Z$ configuration to the following alkenes:
Determine the configuration of each of the following as $Z$ or $E$ as appropriate: Sample Solution (a) One of the doubly bonded carbons bears a methyl group and a hydrogen. According to the CahnIngold-Prelog sequence rules, methyl outranks hydrogen. The other carbon atom of the double bond bears a methyl and a $-\mathrm{CH}_{2} \mathrm{OH}$ group. The $-\mathrm{CH}_{2} \mathrm{OH}$ group is of higher priority than methyl. Higher ranked groups are on the same side of the double bond; the configuration is Z.

(a) Write out the ground-state electron configuration $\left(1 s^{2}, 2 s^{2}, \ldots\right)$ for the carbon atom. (b) What element of next-larger $Z$ has chemical properties similar to those of carbon? Give the ground-state electron configuration for this element.
