Diamond and silicon have similar band strucutre. Why is diamond an insulator while silicon a semiconductor ?

The band gap is the energy difference between the top of the valence band and the bottom of the conduction band. Electrons can move from the valence band to the conduction band if they acquire enough energy, which allows them to conduct electricity. Show more…
