Do you feel this study would be better suited to be a between-subjects or within-subjects design? Why? 3 pts

Determine what the study aims to investigate. If the goal is to compare different groups or conditions, a between-subjects design may be more appropriate. If the study seeks to measure changes within the same participants under different conditions, a Show more…

Discussion Question: Provide an example of a within-subjects research study on which you could use a repeated measures ANOVA to analyze the data. Why is the within subjects design considered "better" than the between subjects design?

For each of the designs below, indicate what kind of design was used: Between-subjects, Within-subjects, or Mixed. Example 1: A researcher is interested in whether the likability of a person is influenced by their job. All participants are given a description of a person and their job. The description of the job varied: either a salesperson or a grade school teacher. Half of the participants viewed the description of the salesperson first, then the grade school teacher, while the other half viewed the description of the grade school teacher first, then the salesperson. After each description, the participants were asked to rate how much they liked the person. The researcher found that the participants liked the grade school teacher more than the salesperson. Example 2: A researcher is interested in the effectiveness of a new drug on students' ability to concentrate. The researcher randomly assigns 25 participants to a placebo, 25 participants to a ½ dose, 25 participants to a full dose, and 25 participants to a dose and a half. Two weeks later, she gives all participants two different tests: a test with unsolvable anagrams and a test with solvable anagrams. The researcher found that the participants who received 1 dose of the new drug reported significantly higher concentration abilities on both the solvable and unsolvable anagrams than participants in any of the other conditions.

One-Way Within-Subjects ANOVA Prompt: A different group of researchers read the write-up and want to look at the study from a different angle. They think that the age of the child has more to do with it than who is or is not in the room. They take a group of children and measure each of them at three time points: young (2 years old), middle (4 years old), and old (6 years old) on the same outcome variable: time till they touch the bowl of cookie. They want to see if children have more self-control when they are older compared to when they were younger.
