Even though the most acidic hydrogen in both alcohols and carboxylic acids is the hydroxyl (-OH) unit in their structure, carboxylic acids have much lower pKa than the corresponding alcohol. Please, explain the reason for their difference in their acidity strength. Also, explain what chemical modifications can be made to tune/adjust acidity strength?
