Exercise 8 Consider an airfoil in a flow of air, where far ahead (upstream) of the airfoil, the pressure, velocity and density are: \( 1.01 \cdot 10^{5} \mathrm{~N} / \mathrm{m}^{2}, 150 \mathrm{~km} / \mathrm{h} \) and \( 1.225 \mathrm{~kg} / \mathrm{m}^{3} \) respectively. At a point \( A \) on the airfoil the pressure is \( 9.95 \cdot 10^{4} \mathrm{~N} / \mathrm{m}^{2} \). Calculate the velocity in \( A \) (in \( \mathrm{m} / \mathrm{s} \) ).

Step 1
Given: Upstream velocity \( V_1 = 150 \, \text{km/h} \). To convert to m/s, use the conversion factor \( 1 \, \text{km/h} = \frac{1}{3.6} \, \text{m/s} \). \[ V_1 = 150 \times \frac{1}{3.6} = 41.67 \, \text{m/s} \] Show more…

An airplane has an effective wing surface area of 12.0 m² that is generating the lift force. In level flight, the airspeed over the top of the wings is 58.5 m/s, while the airspeed beneath the wings is 45.5 m/s. What is the weight of the plane? (The density of air is 1.29 kg/m³) (in N) Water at a pressure of 3.60 atm at street level flows into an office building at a speed of 0.50 m/s through a pipe 5.00 cm in diameter. The pipes taper down to 2.40 cm in diameter by the top floor, 22.0 m above. Calculate the water pressure in such a pipe on the top floor. (in Pa)

Airplane Wing If the speed of flow past the lower surface of an airplane wing is $110 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}$, what speed of flow over the upper surface will give a pressure difference of 900 Pa between upper and lower surfaces? Take the density of air to be $1.30 \times 10^{-3} \mathrm{~g} / \mathrm{cm}^{3}$, and sec Problem 48 .
