Experiment #1: Benzoic Acid & Naphthalene
- Weigh approx. 2 gram Benzoic Acid/Naphthalene mixture. The mixture is 1:1 Benzoic Acid and Naphthalene by weight.
- Add 30ml tert-Butyl methyl ether (MTBE) to 125mL separatory funnel.
- Add Benzoic Acid/Naphthalene mixture.
- Shake GENTLY and vent it! Make sure all sample is dissolved
- Add 20 ml of 1.5M Sodium Bicarbonate
- Shake GENTLY and vent it!
- Let layers separate and draw off lower layer into Erlenmeyer (Label Flask #1)
- Repeat with Na Bicarbonate pour into Flask #1.
- Pour ether (MTBE) into 2nd flask (be careful NOT to get water in it!) Label Flask #2, add a small amount of calcium chloride until calcium chloride stops clumping
- CAUTIOUSLY add concentrated HCl to Flask #1 until litmus paper says acidic.
- Once acidic, cool in ice bath.
- Pour off ether in Flask #2 into an already weighed flask. Use gravity filtration if solution is cloudy. Let ether evaporate by heating in ~70°C water bath.
- Vacuum filter Flask #1. (Don't forget to weigh filter paper & watch glass 1st.)
- Instructor's discretion: Remove a small sample to run m.p. of crude naphthalene when you run purified material. Purify naphthalene using previous recrystallization procedure.
