Adults with severe autism spectrum disorder may represent a vulnerable population and are therefore protected under certain ethical principles guiding psychological research. Case study (questions 23– ) Ms Evans is a single mother who is bringing up a young child with a disability and has just recently attended a local support centre, as she is finding that she is not coping with her child who has been diagnosed with a developmental disability. She meets with a care worker there who explains that the best way forward would be to get an individualised plan developed for her child. This will set out the support that the centre could provide for her and her child, and also a supply a dedicated support worker to action the plan with her approval and consent. The care worker also explains to Ms Evans her rights within plan and also how if she has any complaints what she needs to do. Ms Evans thinks the individual plan will be a good idea, and she is looking forward to the extra support. Maree the carer makes a time with her to meet and go through the individual support plan at the support centre. Maree explains that she is a qualified carer and has mainly worked with children that have a disability for the last 6 years. Then Maree takes her through the plan for her child, and continually checks to see if the plan suits Ms Evans and her child’s needs. They make a few changes, in the schedule and Ms Evans suggests a couple of play activities that her child really likes. Maree confirms that each visit they will record what Maree has done on the plan. She also tells Ms Evans to tell her if anything is not working or would she like to make any changes. Then Maree asks is there any equipment she needs, and agrees to have that available for their sessions. Next week they have their first session, and Ms Evans gives Maree very positive feedback about the session and thanks Maree for her professional approach. She also emails Maree later in the week and says her child keeps asking when will she see Maree again? Ms Evans is so pleased she has decided to get the support. answer the following: Describe two ways the support centre has met its obligations with regard to offering support to Ms Evans and her child?
