for every person that lived 1000 years ago today we have 20 people on earth. In the meantime, many living beings have become extinct. What important inference can you make from this information?

In 1900, there were approximately 1.75 billion humans on earth; in 1950, there were approximately 2.3 billion; in the year 2025, approximately 8 billion people will inhabit the biosphere. in the period between 1900 and 2025, what has happened to the human population?
Joanna Q.
If you go back 40 generations into your biological ancestry: a. How many ancestors are you predicted to have? b. How could you reconcile that prediction with the fact that the world's population of humans is now roughly 7 billion people?
The most recent world population doubling, to a total population of about 6 billion, has occurred in about 40 years. Making the (unrealistic!) assumption that this rate of population will continue for two centuries, what would the world's population be two centuries from now? Such unrealistic assumptions are often useful in projecting future trends because they give us a sense of what is likely or unlikely. For example, this exercise shows us that it is very unlikely that our present population growth will continue for two more centuries.
