To visualize TLC plates, we often use plates that have an embedded fluorescent dye, which emits green light under UV lamps, unless blocked by the presence of a molecule that absorbs light in the UV region of the spectrum. To absorb UV light, molecules typically need to possess a conjugated system. Would you expect sugars like glucose to show up as dark spots on a UV-indicator TLC plate? Why or why not? You will visualize your TLC plates with another extremely common visualization method: KMnO4 stain. You may recognize KMnO4 as an oxidant. Which functional groups of glucose may be susceptible to oxidation?
