Torsional Shear Stress in a Solid Stepped Shaft
Learning Goal:
To calculate the maximum shear stress in a solid stepped shaft due to several applied torques.
A solid stepped shaft (i.e., a shaft that has different diameters) made of steel is loaded with torques as shown. Segment AB is 4 in in diameter, BC is 3 in in diameter, and CD is 2 1/2 in in diameter.
The shaft is fixed at A, as shown.
