Circadian rhythms occur every 24 hours. The unconscious state, when arousal is not possible, is called sleep. During sleep, vital cortical activities continue. The sleep-wake cycle is most likely timed by the RAS. During deep sleep, vital signs decline, and EEG waves decrease in amplitude. During REM sleep, vital signs increase, most muscle movement is inhibited, and the EEG shows alpha waves, accounting for the greatest proportion of sleeping time. Norepinephrine and serotonin release more. They do not disappear.
