Question: What care should be taken to ensure that the magnitude of deformation is within the limit? My answer: When calculating the effects of forces on a structure, it is assumed that the structure is in static equilibrium. This means that it is within the elastic limits (according to Hooke's law), experiencing static loads (as opposed to dynamic loads), and the grains are affected uniformly. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the structure has not been deflected beyond the elastic limit, which would result in some level of permanent deformation in the plastic state. Once the load is removed from the beam, the beam must return to its original shape, proving that it is still within the elastic limit.
