How are mid-ocean ridges formed at divergent tectonic plates? The plates are moving in a zigzag formation, creating shallow earthquakes which form a mid-ocean ridge. Mid-ocean ridges are not resulting features of ocean-to-ocean divergent boundary zones. The plates are moving towards each other, which causes the crust to buckle and push upwards or sideways, forming a mid-ocean ridge. The stretching lithosphere is pushed up as the plates move apart.
