What are some implications of having viscosity in a fluid? Viscious fluids are always denser than ideal ones. Viscous fluids are harder to pour or force through a pipe. Velocity of flow of a viscous fluid is highest at the walls of a pipe compared to the middle. The presence of viscosity requires a pressure difference between the ends of a pipe. Part B The difference in pressure Δp needed between the ends of a pipe to maintain a viscous fluid flowing depends on several factors: It decreases with the viscosity coefficient. The viscosity of a fluid plays a very important role in determining how a fluid flows. (See Video $V 1.3$.) The value of the viscosity depends not only on the specific fluid but also on the fluid temperature. Some experiments show that when a liquid, under the action of a constant driving pressure, is forced with a low velocity, $V$, through a small horizontal tube, the velocity is given by the equation $V=K / \mu .$ In this equation $K$ is a constant for a given tube and pressure, and $\mu$ is the dynamic viscosity. For a particular liquid of interest, the viscosity is given by Andrade's equation (Eq. 1.11 ) with $D=5 \times 10^{-7} \mathrm{Ib} \cdot \mathrm{s} / \mathrm{ft}^{2}$ and $B=4 \mathrm{COO}^{\circ} \mathrm{R} . \mathrm{By}$ what percentage will the velocity increase as the liquid temperature is increased from $40^{\circ} \mathrm{F}$ to $100^{\circ} \mathrm{F}$ ? Assume all other factors remain constant.
A pump fitted with 20 mm bore ball bearings uses oil whose viscosity ranges from 50 cSt at cold pump start-up to 20 cSt when running at maximum speed and load. If these viscosities are the safe limits for the oil, specify the maximum start-up speed and the maximum running speed you would recommend for the pump.
