Selective laser melting (SLM) is commonly-used Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) process in which laser beam works as heat source to melt metallic powder. The process parameters including laser power, scanning speed, and hatch spacing have important influences on the internal voids formed in the part. In this study case, relative densities were investigated under different SLM process parameters. The powder material was Stainless steel 316. Laser heat source was 1 kW fiber laser with 1070 nm wavelength. Laser spot diameter was 80 μm. Assume: relative density + porosity = 1. Fig.1 depicts the influence of the process parameters on the relative density of the SLM specimens. What are the properties of laser radiation?
Describe the factors which affect the selection of cutting feeds and speeds, and the depth of cut that can be taken (such as workpiece rigidity, machine condition, type of tooling being used, material type, finish and tolerance required)
