Case study 1 (questions 1–11) Robert is 32 years old and has been a general duties police officer in a small country town for the last three years. He is married with two young children. Robert has made an appointment with Claire, a local Community Health Service support worker. When he arrives, Claire notices that he looks exhausted and anxious. Robert’s hands tremble as he fidgets with items on the table; he constantly scans the room, is apprehensive and seems unsettled by the noisy office outside the room. During their discussion, Robert tells Claire he needs help because he feels stressed and overwhelmed. He is experiencing headaches and nausea and has trouble sleeping, usually because of nightmares. He thinks this is due to the shift work and has been taking a sleeping tablet, but they don’t seem to work. He says he is drinking more on his days off, which helps him sleep, but the drinking is causing problems with his wife. He admits to frequent angry outbursts with his wife and children and feeling extremely remorseful and ashamed. He says, ‘My wife said she can’t take it anymore and that she’ll divorce me if I don’t sort this out; sometimes, I think everyone would be better off without me.’ Claire asks about Robert’s history. He identifies many of his current issues began after attending a car accident in which a drug-affected driver killed a fellow police officer and his two young children. Robert admits he is uncomfortable discussing his problems with colleagues as he feels like ‘attending accidents is all part of the job and I just need to deal with it’. He has lost confidence in his ability to do his job, has called in sick often because of panic attacks and now sees himself as a ‘loser’ in not meeting his job’s or his family’s needs. He knows he isn’t coping well and needs help to manage his stress levels and anxiety. Robert says to Claire, ‘I just want to fix this … do my job well, patch things up with my family and feel normal and happy again … before this kills me’. answer the following: (a) Briefly describe two signs/symptoms of Robert’s self-esteem issues. (b) Indicate which two counselling therapies Claire could use and briefly describe why these therapies. give 30 words each
