The demand for illegal drugs is inelastic. Much of the expenditure on illegal drugs comes from crime. Assuming these statements to be correct: a. How will a successful campaign that decreases the supply of drugs influence the price of illegal drugs and the amount spent on them? b. What will happen to the amount of crime? c. What is the most effective way of decreasing the quantity of illegal drugs bought and decreasing the amount of drug-related crime?

Suppose an addictive substance is made illegal assuming the demand for the substance is relatively inelastic. The risks of black markets drive up the price significantly. What is the affect on quantity of usage and total spending when prohibition increases the prices?

Demand may be price-elastic for casual users of drugs- - ones who are not addicted or for whom substitute products are readily available. In this case, restrictions or price increases will have a significant impact on use. Draw a supply and demand diagram like Figure $5-4$ where the demand curve is price-elastic. Show the effect of a steep tax on quantity demanded. Show that, because demand is price-elastic, total spending on drugs with restrictions will fall. Explain why this analysis would support the argument of those who would severely limit the availability of addictive substances.

00:02 If a supply of illegal drugs decreases due to successful campaign, the price of illegal drugs will increase.
00:24 This is because demand for illegal drugs is inelastic, meaning that people will still be willing to pay a high price for drugs even if the supply is low.
00:41 As a result, the amount spent on illegal drugs will also increase.
00:46 So the amount of crime may decrease if the supply of drugs decreases.
01:05 This is because much of expenditure on illegal drugs comes from crime such as theft or drug related violence...
