1) An ectopic pregnancy occurs if a blastula implants outside the uterus. This type of pregnancy is not viable. Using implantation in the fallopian tube as an example, explain the problems for maternal and embryonic health.

REVIEW & CONCEPTS 1. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the embryo implants somewhere other than within the uterine cavity. The usual location for an ectopic pregnancy is within the uterine tubes. Explain why this is dangerous. 2. The endometrial layer of the uterus consists of two layers, a superficial stratum functionalis and a deeper stratum basalis. Explain the function of each layer. 3. Entry of the genetic material of the fertilizing sperm marks the "moment of conception". Although only one sperm actually enters the cytoplasm of the secondary oocyte, successful fertilization requires that multiple sperm encounter the oocyte & corona radiata/zona pellucida (dozens to over 100). Explain why. 4. Explain the importance of the location of the testes (within the scrotum instead of inside the ventral body cavity).
