Investigation #3: Electric Potential and Voltage Voltmeters A voltmeter is a device used to measure the potential difference (voltage) across a circuit element. When a voltmeter is connected correctly in a circuit, it will measure the voltage without changing the circuit's behavior. When it is connected incorrectly, the behavior of the circuit changes. Definition of The diagram you just completed is called a "potential diagram". Each potential color in such a diagram shows the portion of the circuit where the electric potential is constant. What is the voltmeter reading in the circuit above when one probe is connected to point A and the other connected to point B? What is the voltmeter reading when one probe is connected to point C and the other probe is connected to point D? Explain your reasoning in terms of the potential diagram you drew above to easily identify the electric potential differences between various locations in an electric circuit. What is the potential difference across any piece of metal (e.g. across a metal wire)? In the circuit above, how does the voltage across points A and D compare to the voltage across points B and C?
