Today we will be reviewing the concept of knowledge representation.
00:05
Researchers have been interested in this topic for some time.
00:09
How knowledge, how is knowledge represented? what forms do mental representations take? how is it organized in memory? these are all questions that they're asking.
00:22
Technically, it takes place in many different forms, depending on what type of material it is.
00:31
So we'll talk about three of these forms.
00:34
The first one is schemas.
00:37
Schemes are organized knowledge about specific events based on prior events.
00:47
For example, we all have schemas about going through drive -thrus, fast food restaurants.
00:55
We pull up to the drive -thru, we look at the menu, we order, through the speaker, and we pull around to pay for and receive our food.
01:06
This is what typically takes place at any drive -through you go to.
01:12
The second one is called semantic networks, and these contain codes or nodes that represent concepts and ideas.
01:26
So in this example, say we are thinking about the concept of a bird.
01:36
Now, you would probably think of lots of different things when you hear the word bird.
01:41
You may think of a robin.
01:45
You may think of a sparrow.
01:49
Maybe you'll think of their attributes.
01:52
They have feathers.
01:55
Maybe you think of the actions of birds.
01:58
They can fly.
02:00
So all these different things are associated with bird.
02:04
Some of them, you think of much quicker, so those associations are closer together on the map, but they are all linked together...
