In Jamaica, the National Water Commission (NWC), provides over 190 million gallons of potable
water daily to over 2 million persons island wide. NWC ensures that the water is safe for drinking by
implementing an extensive treatment process. Customers being served by government wells in St.
Catherine are sometimes faced with blackwater problems due to the presence of manganese ions.
Although manganese is not a health risk, it is a nuisance to the consumers. According to NEPA, the
concentration of manganese should not exceed 1.00 mg/L. Plan and design an experiment to
determine the concentration of manganese ion content in the water at these wells.
