The read-write head for a hand-held music player has a surface area of $0.04 \mathrm{~mm}^{2}$. The head is held $0.04 \mu \mathrm{m}$ above the disk, which is rotating at a constant rate of 1800 rpm. Determine the torque $\mathbf{T}$ that must be applied to the disk to overcome the frictional shear resistance of the air between the head and the disk. The surrounding air is at standard atmospheric pressure and a temperature of $20^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$. Assume the velocity profile is linear.
A new computer drive is proposed to have a disc, as shown in Fig. $P 1.84 .$ The disc is to rotate at $10,000 \mathrm{rpm},$ and the reader head is to be positioned 0.0005 in. above the surface of the disc. Estimate the shearing force on the reader head as a result of the air between the disc and the head.
The spinning platter of a computer hard disk can act as a sort of gyroscope. Some early portable MP3 players contained a single hard disk, and the angular momentum of the disk could be "felt" when the MP3 player was turned or rotated. It is theoretically possible to make an MP3 player using two identical hard disks mounted in such a way that the angular momentum of the disks is not felt when the player is rotated. In which arrangement in Figure $\mathrm{P} 9.72$ are the spinning disks mounted in this way?
