Interstellar clouds often contain the molecule CN, which has a first excited state of rotation at the time of its rotation. It is 4.7 × 10-4 eV more than the basic state. This excited state is also 3 times. In 1941, studies spectroscopic data made at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in British Columbia by Andrew McKellar (1910-1960) showed that for every 10 molecules in the basic state, 3 others are in this first excited state, on average 1 in each excited sub-state. McKellar had then suggested that this gas could be in thermal equilibrium with any "thermal reservoir". What would be the temperature of this heat tank? What could this heat reservoir be?
