12.4 PS The following variables were collected for a sample of ten precincts during the last national election. Compute $r$ and $r^2$ for each combination of variables and write a paragraph interpreting the rela- tionship between these variables. Take voter turnout as the dependent variable. A researcher obtains a Pearson correlation of r = -0.30 for a sample of n = 52 participants. For a two tailed test, which of the following accurately describes the significance of the correlation? a) The correlation is significant with either alpha = .05 or alpha = .01. b) The correlation is not significant with either alpha = .05 or alpha = .01. c) The correlation is significant with alpha = .05 but not with alpha = .01. d) There is not enough information to evaluate the significance of the correlation.

What is Pearson's r (i.e., the correlation coefficient)? What type of relationship does it measure? Pearson's r is a measure of association. What does measure? What is the purpose of measures of association? A researcher hypothesized that participation in the political process will tend to be lower in economically disadvantaged areas. In a study of the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia (N = 51), the researcher found Pearson's r = -0.537 for the percentage of families in the state below the poverty level in 1979 and the percentage of the population in the state casting a vote for U.S. representatives in 1984. Is this result consistent with the researcher's hypothesis? Explain. Using information from question #3, calculate and interpret R^2.

Question 1 (5 Points). Is there a relationship between gender and political party support? Data below shows counts of males and females in a sample population and political party they voted for. • Create the observations matrix using the provided R syntax below • Select the appropriate statistical test, • Formulate the null hypothesis in your own words, • Compute the test statistic, • Find and interpret the statistical decision at the 0.01 significance level # Gender and political affiliation observed <- as.table(rbind(c(762, 327, 468), c(484, 239, 477))) dimnames(observed) <- list(gender = c("F", "M"), party = c("Democrat", "Independent", "Republican")) observed
