LAB FLOW CHART GUIDELINES In some Pre-lab assignments, a flow chart of the reactions/separations is required. A sample flow chart is provided in figure 1. It depicts the dehydration reaction of cyclohexanol to form cyclohexene. • All flow charts need to start by listing the starting material(s) or starting mixture at the top. • Each step must be listed simply along the side of each vertical line. • The phase or description of each chemical that has just been separated should be written along each horizontal line (e.g. solid, filtrate, ether layer, mother liquor, etc.). • A horizontal line ONLY occurs when a separation happens (ie steps involving separatory funnels, filtration, distillation, etc.) • The resulting compound(s) must be written underneath the vertical arrows or lines. • All steps and separations must be included (clean up steps not required).
