Nine people were involved in an experiment to determine whether background noise (music, slamming of doors, people making coffee, etc.) affects short-term memory (recall of words). Four individuals were randomly allocated to the NOISE condition, and 5 individuals to the QUIET condition. The participants tried to memorize a list of 30 words in two minutes. Those in the NOISE condition tried to memorize the list while listening to pre-recorded noise through earphones; those in the QUIET condition wore earphones but heard no noise as they attempted to memorize the words. A study was conducted at St. Lawrence University that compared the cognitive ability when students use their full attention compared to divided attention. 221 students are in the study where d = full - divided . The two tests that the students underwent involved recalling words, so the units are number of words recalled.
