Let's Practice 2: Answer the questions
Calculate $\Delta H_{rxn}$ for the following reaction based on the
chemical reactions shown below: S(s) + O$_2$ (g) $\rightarrow$ SO$_2$ (g)
S(s) + 3/2O$_2$ (g) $\rightarrow$ SO$_3$ (g) $\Delta H$ = -395.2 kJ
2SO$_2$(g) + O$_2$ (g) $\rightarrow$ 2SO$_3$ (g) $\Delta H$ = -198.2 kJ
To find the overall reaction you need to reverse reaction 2,
multiply it by 1/2 and then add the 2 reactions to one another.
S(s) + 3/2O$_2$(g) + SO$_3$(g) $\rightarrow$ SO$_3$(g) + SO$_2$(g) + 1/2O$_2$(g)
S(s) + O$_2$ (g) $\rightarrow$ SO$_2$ (g)
$\Delta H$ = (-395.2 kJ) + 1/2(+198.2 kJ) = -296.1 kJ
