The physical half-life of a radioactive tracer is 20 hours while its biological half-life is 15 hours. The radiologist found that the current effective half-life is too long and needs to be reduced. By how much the biological half-life should increase such that the effective half-life reduces 3 times, while the physical half-life remain the same.

Step 1
- Physical half-life: The time it takes for half of a substance to decay or degrade. Now, let's assume the initial biological half-life is x. According to the given information, the effective half-life reduces 3 times. This means the new effective half-life is Show more…

6. What is the biological half life in this same context? (What governs biological half life?) 7. What is the effective half life? (No need to provide the equation, just describe)

The half-lives of both zero-order and second-order reactions depend on the initial concentration, as well as on the rate constant. In one case, the half-life gets longer as the initial concentration increases, and in the other it gets shorter. Which is which, and why isn't the situation the same for both?
