Hi everybody, so this little video deals with a chemical basis of life.
00:09
It's kind of just some fundamental ideas about chemistry because all living things are made of chemicals and are maintained through chemical processes.
00:22
And so these terms mostly are dealing with the basics of chemistry, some things about atoms and, and simple things like that.
00:35
And so what we're going to do is we're going to match a term with a phrase that describes it or defines it.
00:44
And that will help us review some of these ideas of chemistry.
00:53
So let's start right here with hydrophilic.
00:59
Hydro hopefully remind you of water.
01:03
And philic, think about the root phylic.
01:06
File means that it, file means love, so hydrophilic, it loves water.
01:14
These are compounds that are easily dissolved in water.
01:19
The reason they're easily dissolved in water is because they're polar.
01:22
So water, you know, h2o, so the hydrogen side of water can grab onto negative charges, negatively charged things, and the oxygen side of water can grab on to positively charged things.
01:38
Things.
01:39
And so anything that is polar that has a positive and negative side and easily dissolved in water tends, we call that hydrophilic.
01:51
Next, the atomic number, the atomic number of an element is simply the number of protons that that element has in its nucleus.
02:06
And so that's right across there.
02:10
Atomic numbers, a number of protons in the nucleus...
