MATLAB Reaction Forces
My Solutions:
Calculating the tensile force in each support of a truss is done by solving a system of linear equations.
As shown in the figure below, the beam is supported on each edge symbolized by the triangle symbols (known as pins). There is also an applied force of 100N between the two pins.
100N
R1 2 m
3m
If you sum the forces in the positive y-direction and sum the moments about the left end of the beam, you arrive at the system of equations as:
R1 + R2 = 100
M5R1 = 200
In this exercise, calculate the forces on the supports of a beam using MATLAB. To do so, you would want to start framing the system of equations in the form of Ax = b, where:
A = coefficient matrix
x = reaction forces you want to solve in vector form (R1 and R2)
b = sum of forces
Since we are interested in getting values of vector x, we can simply solve it by: x = A^(-1) * b. That is, x can be solved by taking the inverse of matrix A and then performing matrix multiplication on b.
a. Formulate the system of equations as Ax = b. We expect to get variables named as A and b.
b. Calculate for x. Make sure to use the inverse of matrix A and matrix multiplication.
