The first thing you need to understand is the three stages of information processing.

That's encoding, encoding, storage.

Now encoding comes first.

When we perceive something, we are bringing information in through our sensory organs into what we call sensory memory.

Now it gets there through a process called encoding, which transforms that raw input in this case, just looking at the literal words on the page for the magazine, into something that fits into our brain a little bit better.

When you think back about that story, you're not likely to remember exactly how the words looked on the page, how they were organized, probably not even the specific wording or phrasing that the author used.

That is because of encoding, which puts it into your brain in a way that is useful, connects it with other stuff, stores it efficiently.

Now, our sensory memory has a very short lifespan.
