On a class field trip, one student out of a class of 24 is needed to assist the zookeeper in feeding the elephant. Explain how to use a random number generator to choose the student assistant fairly.

Step 1
Determine the range of numbers that the random number generator should produce. In this case, the range should be from 1 to 24, since there are 24 students in the class. Show more…

Assume your class has 30 students and you want a random sample of 10 of them. Describe how to randomly select 10 people from your class using the random number table.
Simple Random Samples Instructions: Use the random number table and the situation given to select a sample. 46795 05947 01934 89640 39437 90044 There are 88 students at the dance studio and 10 of them will be selected at random for cleaning duty every week. Each dance student receives a number from 01 to 88. The studio uses the above random digit table to pick the 10 students. We will have randomly pulled the numbers so we will start with the first number in the list for our first entry. From this random number table we arrive at the following students who will be used for our random sample. 46,

One of the authors collected data from a class to see whether humans made selections randomly, as a random number generator would. Each of 38 students had to pick an integer from one to five. The data are summarized in the table. A true random number generator would create roughly equal numbers of all five integers. Do a goodness-of-fit analysis to test the hypothesis that humans are not like random number generators. Use a significance level of $0.05$, and assume these data were from a random sample of students. See page 552 for guidance.
