On January 6, 2013, at approximately 10:30 a.m., two males armed with sawed-off shotguns entered the Kroger grocery store at 6120 Newbern Avenue in Raleigh, NC. They went directly to the SunTrust Bank at that location. One suspect jumped the teller counter and took the two tellers on duty at gunpoint, forcing them into the walk-in safe, which was open due to a funds delivery earlier. There, this suspect forced the tellers to open the interior safe cage door, gaining access to the bank's cash holdings. During this time, the second suspect had forced three customers at gunpoint to move into the safe as well. The suspects took large amounts of cash and stuffed it into four garbage bags. As the suspects were fleeing the bank and grocery store, an off-duty Wake County Deputy in uniform was walking into the store. One suspect fired his shotgun, striking the deputy in his arm and leg and knocking him to the ground. The suspects then fled on a motorcycle on Newbern Avenue toward I-440. At approximately 10:56 a.m., the suspects wrecked the motorcycle after a short vehicle pursuit and were apprehended.
