In a study, people with anxiety disorder took an eight-week course in mindfulness meditation, in which they learned to focus on the present moment and accept difficult thoughts or feelings. Each participant was subjected to a stressful event before and after the course and stress hormone levels were measured at both times. Differences were calculated for each participant. The researchers found that, after completing the course, these participants showed significantly reduced levels of stress hormones during a stressful event, compared with how their bodies reacted before the course.
