1.) Which of the following is NOT a reason that Aplysia makes a good model organism for studying synaptic plasticity? - it is an invasive species - it has very few neurons - it has a number of behaviors that are modified by experience - all of the above 2.) The gill withdrawal reflex of Aplysia is only seen in freshwater animals. - involves the quick escape of Aplysia due to a jet of water from its gills. - describes the withdrawal of its gills after the siphon is touched. - is less pronounced after sensitization. 3.) What is the relationship of serotonin to the gill withdrawal reflex? - serotonin must be present for sensitization to occur - serotonin must be present for the muscles that govern the reflex to contract - serotonin production is inhibited following tail shocks - all of the above are true 4.) Which of the following is involved in the serotonin (5HT)-induced long-term facilitation seen in the gill-withdrawal reflex? - protein kinase A - adenylate cyclase - cAMP - G-protein coupled receptors - all of the above 5.) Jane is studying the effect of cocaine on the amygdala of macaque monkeys. To train her animals, she has developed a protocol to reward animals with a shot of fruit juice any time they pull a lever. This is an example of _____. - cognition - imprinting - classical conditioning - operant conditioning
Maggot therapy? People generally don’t think “health” when they hear the word “maggot,” but one experiment tested the ability of maggots to remove dead tissue from open wounds that would not heal on their own. Sterile maggots were placed in a small pouch which, in turn, was placed on the wound. 100 men with wounds on their lower limbs were randomly assigned to receive either a traditional surgical treatment or maggot therapy. After eight days, the percentage of dead tissue in the wounds that underwent maggot treatment was 54.5$\%$ , compared to 66.5$\%$ with the surgical treatment. (The difference decreased with time, and the advantage disappeared by about day 15.) Neither patients nor the doctors evaluating the wounds knew which therapy had been applied. (Patients were blindfolded as bandages were changed.) Surprisingly, the number of patients that reported a crawling sensation in their wound was about the same in both groups!
