Phys 129 Worksheet 5 - Forces 1
Problem 4 - A Layer of Abstraction
There are three forces acting on a point-like object with a mass of 5.00 kg. The first two forces can be represented by:
$vec{F_{1}} = (25.0 N)hat{i} - (35.0 N)hat{j}$, $vec{F_{2}} = (37.5 N)hat{i} + (12.5 N)hat{j}$
Under the influence of the three forces, the object's acceleration is:
$vec{a} = (2.00 m/s^{2})hat{j}$
a) Find the magnitude and direction (relative to the +x axis) of the third force, $vec{F_{3}}$.
b) In the space below, draw an approximate graphical representation of Newton's 2nd Law for this scenario, which can be expressed as $vec{F_{1}} + vec{F_{2}} + vec{F_{3}} = mvec{a}$. Be sure to include and label your axes.
