(b) Nitrogen gas is steadily compressed from 80 kPa and 27°C to 480 kPa by a 10-kW compressor. (i) determine the mass flow rate of nitrogen through the compressor for polytropic compression with n = 1.3; (ii) if ideal two-stage compression with intercooling with a polytropic exponent of 1.3, where the pressure ratio across each stage of the compressor is the same, is used, determine the change in the mass flow rate of Nitrogen as compared to that in (i). Assuming a) Nitrogen is an ideal gas with constant specific heats; b) The process is reversible and c) Kinetic and potential energy changes are negligible.

An adiabatic air compressor compresses $10 \mathrm{~L} / \mathrm{s}$ of air at $120 \mathrm{kPa}$ and $20^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$ to $1000 \mathrm{kPa}$ and $300^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$. Determine $(a)$ the work required by the compressor, in $\mathrm{kJ} / \mathrm{kg},$ and $(b)$ the power required to drive the air compressor, in $\mathrm{kW}$.
A compressor in a refrigerator receives $\mathrm{R}-410 \mathrm{a}$ at $150 \mathrm{kPa},-40^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$ and brings it up to $600 \mathrm{kPa}$, using an actual specific work of $58.65 \mathrm{~kJ} / \mathrm{kg}$ in adiabatic compression. Find the specific reversible work.
A completely reversible refrigerator is driven by a 10-kW compressor and operates with thermal energy reservoirs at $250 \mathrm{~K}$ and $300 \mathrm{~K} .$ Calculate the rate of cooling provided by this refrigerator. Answer: $50 \mathrm{~kW}$
