Bright -10 -5 0 Absolute Magnitude 5 Main Sequence Stars Sun 10 Dim 15 O B A F G K M HOT Spectral Type COOL Below is a table giving both the apparent magnitude and spectral type for five main sequence stars. For each star do the following: 6. Using the above H-R diagram, mark the location of each star in the table placing its spectral type on the main sequence. Label each star plotted on the H-R diagram and estimate the absolute magnitude. Write your answer in the absolute magnitude column of the table below. 7. Complete the distance column in the table below by classifying each star as being closer, slightly farther, or much farther than 10 parsecs away. This procedure called spectroscopic parallax provides astronomers with another way to measure the distance to the stars. Arcturus (BoŁtis) appears as a very bright red star relatively near to our Sun. In this problem, we see how to calculate its distance, luminosity, surface temperature, and diameter. (a) We first look for parallax motion. We measure a parallax angle of 88.8 milli-arcseconds. How far away is Arcturus? Answer in ly. (b) Arcturus is about a magnitude -0.05 star. More exactly, we measure an apparent brightness of 4.30x10^-8 W/m² when all of the light spectra are considered. What is its total Luminosity in W? Also express Arcturus' luminosity in units of LSun (c) Arcturus is a spectral K0III star (K spectral stars are orange in color). We measure the peak emission from Arcturus at roughly 700 nm, which is in the visible range toward red. What is Arcturus' surface temperature? (d) Using the temperature derived above, calculate the power per unit area (P/A) emitted from Arcturus' surface. Answer in W/m². (e) Calculate the surface area in m² of Arcturus and its radius. Answer in m, RSun. (h) Surprisingly, Arcturus has a mass of about 1.1 MSun. In what stage of its evolution is it? What is going on in the core? What will happen next?

10. [3pt] A red giant star has a temperature of 4000 K and a luminosity of 15000 LSun. How many times bigger is this star than the Sun? 11. [3pt] Match each of the characteristics listed below the appropriate object. Select M Main sequence stars, R Red giants, or W White dwarfs A) very cool, but very luminous. B) The Sun, for example. C) Found in the upper-right of the HR diagram. D) Not much larger in radius than Earth. E) The majority of stars in our galaxy. F) Very hot but very dim. G) The hottest and most luminous stars. Hint: More massive stars are brighter (because they are hotter) and burn up faster. The mass of a star determines where it lies on the main sequence. 12. [4pt] A star with spectral type B0 has a surface temperature of 29200 K and a radius of 6.7 RSun. How many times more luminous is this star than the Sun? (if it is less luminous enter a number less than one) 13. [4pt] This star has a mass of 16 MSun. Using the simple approximation that we made in class, what is the main sequence lifetime of this star? You may assume that the lifetime of the sun is 10^10 yr.
