Passwords secure our online data and sensitive information, but how ‘unbreakable’ are the passwords we easily remember? The most basic password encryptions rely on high numbers of possible ordered arrangements to prevent the likelihood of ‘randomly guessing’ the password. In theory, the longer the password can be, the more time is required to test every possible combination and be guaranteed to break the code. However, common habits, such as using strings of letters that form words, or beginning words with capital letters, can help potential password ‘crackers’ to reduce the number of likely combinations and therefore reduce the time required to determine the password. More secure password policies may require extra levels of password complexity, such as capitals, numbers and special characters. Further security is sometimes added by restricting the number of attempts that can be made each day, or ‘time lock-outs’ to increase the time required to test every possibility. Task Investigate the expected security of passwords when varying pieces of information are known or reasonably assumed. Let ‘reasonably assumed’ mean common habits that people may use to easily remember their password (e.g. using a word followed by numbers, starting or ending with a special character). Justify ways that security can be increased by experimenting with the effectiveness of different password requirements, including length requirements, use of characters and passphrases. Use technology to assist your experimentation. Based on your findings, present a clearly reasoned report guiding young adults to understand the mathematical results justifying more complex passwords and provide several strategies for creating passwords that are more difficult to guess. To complete this task, you must: • present your findings as an investigative report based on the ‘Approach to problem solving and mathematical modelling’ guide • develop a unique response. • demonstrate appropriate use of technology.
