We have a cement walk way with a rectangular manhole cover and that manhole cover has an area of .5 square meters. Are pathway is a rectangle, so it has a length and a width, so that would be number 1 number 2. We want to know how we're going to represent the length and width of the pathway, so we're told that the length is 8 meters longer than the width. So for number 2 i'm going to let w equal the width and then the length is going to equal with plus 8 the area of that cement pathway is going to be length times with or with times w plus 8. Now i want the area of the cemented portion, so i need to take the area of the whole path and subtract from it. The area of the man hole, so the area of the whole path is w, squared plus 8 w, and then the area of the manhole, i'm told, is .5 square meters. So minus point fivenow, i'm told the area of the cemented portion is 19.5 and that's square meters which equation would describe the area, so the equation to describe that area would be the 1 we just came up with w squared plus 8 w minus .5 equals 19.5. How will you find the length and the width okay, so we're just going to solve that equation? First thing: we're going to do is subtract 19.5 from both sides and then we're going to factor. So that gives me w plus 10 and w minus 2 point. I get w equals negative 10 and positive to point. The negative 10 is extraneous because it's a length and it can't be negative. So that means the width is 2 meters and the length is remember, our length was with plus 8, so that's 2, plus 8 or 10 m, and those are the dimensions of the walkway.

Absolute Value - Example 1

In mathematics, the absolute value or modulus |x| of a real number x is its numerical value without regard to its sign. The absolute value of a number may be thought of as its distance from zero along a number line; this interpretation is analogous to the distance function assigned to a real number in the real number system. For example, the absolute value of ?4 is 4, and the absolute value of 4 is 4, both without regard to sign.
