Problem #2 : Polyphase Motor
Suppose that 3 different coils are placed at position θ(1) = 0 degrees, θ(2) = 120 degrees,
and θ(3) = 240 degrees as shown in the figure above. Let us assume that the magnetic field
produced by the three coils at the center of this arrangement is given by :
B1 = Bo sin(ω1t+α1) B2 = Bo sin(ω2t+α2) B3 = Bo sin(ω3t+α3)
A) Determine the value of ω1, ω2, ω3, α1, α2 and α3 so that this arrangement produces a
counter-clockwise rotating magnetic field with constant angular velocity ωo !
B) Determine also the value of α1, α2 and α3 so that this arrangement produces a clockwise
rotating magnetic field! Now let us consider a general case where the coils' position are at θ1,
θ2 and θ3.
