Problem 8. (Multi-state systems)
A two-state system has two different macrostates that it can be in, and it can freely evolve between them. The multiplicity of macrostate 1 is 10 times larger than the multiplicity of macrostate 2: Ģā = 10 Ģā.
A. What is the change in entropy if the system moves from state 1 to state 2 (in units of J/K)?
B. The probability must be normalized (the sum of all probabilities must be 1). What is the probability that the system is in state 1?
C. The entropy of state 1 is 70 J/(mol K). What is Ģā?
A three-state system has three different macrostates that it can be in. The multiplicity of state 1 is twice that of state 2, and four times the multiplicity of state 3: Ģā = 2Ģā, and Ģā = 4Ģā
D. What is the probability that the system is in state 2?
E. The entropy of state 1 is 20 J/(mol K). What is the entropy of state 3 (in units of J/K)?
