Problem One ( 20 Points ):
Two moles of a monatomic ideal gas at (5.5 MPa, 6 L) is expanded isothermally until the volume is doubled (step 1 - A to B). Then the gas expands adiabatically until the pressure is 1 Mpa (step 2 – B to C). The temperature drops in this process. The gas is now compressed isothermally until its volume is back to 6 L(step 3 – C to D). Finally, the gas is heated isochorically to return to the initial state (step 4 – D to A).
(a)Draw the four processes in the pV plane.
(b) Fill in Table One.
(c) Fill in Table Two.
(d) Find the total work done by the gas.
Table One:
State | Pressure (MPa) | Volume (cubic meters) | Temperature (Kelvin)
A
B
C
D
Table Two:
Process | Heat in Joules | Work in Joules | Change in Internal Energy in Joules
A to B Isothermal
B to C Adiabatic
C to D Isothermal
D to A Isochoric
