With computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools a process called peck drilling, or interrupted cut drilling, is used to keep swarf from detrimentally building up when drilling deep holes. A 10mm diameter slotting mill is to be used to drill through a 75mm thick piece of mild steel. The drill starts each cut from a datum 20mm above the material surface and on the first cut drills 5 mm into the material and then withdraws to the datum. If each subsequent cut progresses 5mm further into the material determine the least number of cuts to bring the drill 5mm below the bottom surface of the material. Additionally find the total distance in mm travelled by the milling cutter if it withdraws to the datum after the last cut.
