Green fluorescent protein (GFP) is a substance that was first extracted from jellyfish; variants are used to "tag" biological molecules for study. The original "wild" GFP absorbs 395 -nm light, undergoing an upward transition to an excited state. Movement of a proton within the protein then excites it to 2.44 eV above the ground state. Photons emitted in the subsequent downward transition to the ground state provide a visual indication of the GFP's location as seen in a microscope. What's the wavelength of these photons?

GFP absorbs blue light to be excited and then it emits green light. Similarly, blue-fluorescent protein (BFP) absorbs violet light and emits blue light. If cells express two interacting chimeric proteins (A & B), one tagged with GFP and the other with BFP, what do you expect to observe when these two proteins interact and when you expose these cells with violet light excitation? You will observe green emission light even though cells are not exposed to blue light, but no blue light emission will be observed. You will not observe any light due to the quenching of fluorophore.
