If the net force on an object is in the y-direction, then it can accelerate in the x-direction. it might be moving in the x-direction. its velocity component in the y-direction will be constant. it definitely will not be moving in the x-direction.

An object is moving with constant velocity in the -Y-direction. Suddenly, it experiences an acceleration in the -X-direction. Which of the following is true? The velocity vector will begin to turn towards the -X-direction: The velocity vector will continue to point in the -Y-direction, since the two directions are independent: The velocity vector will continue to point in the -Y-direction; but its magnitude will shrink to zero. The velocity vector will begin to turn towards the +X-direction:

An object moves with a constant speed in a straight line. Which statement must be true according to Newton's first law? There are no forces acting on the object. There must be a force on the object that causes it to continue to move forward. The vector sum of the forces acting on the object is zero. The object will slow down by itself unless there is a net force acting on it.

1 A net force ___. is capable of producing a change in velocity /- is a scalar quantity /- can both produce motion and is capable of producing a change in velocity 2 For every action force, there is which of the following? an opposite but not necessary equal force /- an equal and opposite force /- a friction force /- an unbalanced force 3 What is a possible state of an object in the absence of a net force? at rest /- zero acceleration /- constant speed /- all of these 4 What term refers to the tendency of an object to remain at rest or in uniform, straight-line motion? external force /- mass /- force /- inertia
