Text: Question 4 (8 Marks):
The intensity I of a beam of gamma-rays is related to the thickness x of the absorber through which it has passed by the equation:
I = Io * exp(-x)
where Io is the incident intensity and α is the linear absorption coefficient. The following values of I were obtained for various thicknesses x of steel:
x (mm) 5 10 15 20 25
I (A) 5.05 4.50 3.65 3.20 2.6
(a) Manipulate the equation above to give the equation of a straight line and explain how you would find α and xi/2, the half-value layer, from this graph. (Note that there is no need to plot a graph here). [4]
(b) Plot a graph of I versus x, and from the graph determine the half-value layer X1/2. [4]
