Arachnophobia is the fear of spiders. People with arachnophobia suffer to different degrees, but they tend to react intensely to visible signs of the presence of spiders, such as webs. The director of a clinic decides to investigate different treatment types for arachnophobia. She gathers three groups of clients: One group receives in vivo flooding, which involves prolonged or repeated exposure to the actual anxiety-producing stimuli. The second group receives imaginal flooding, which involves the same techniques as in vivo flooding, except the exposure occurs in the client's imagination. The third group receives no treatment. The results come in, and a statistician conducts an analysis of variance. Null hypothesis or alternate hypothesis: The null hypothesis is that at least one of the population means is different from another (in other words, there is an effect of at least one of the treatments). The alternate hypothesis is that there is no difference between the population means (in other words, there is no treatment effect). The factor; the dependent variable or the different: The treatment type is the factor, and the dependent variable is the different treatment types. The factor; the dependent variable or the different: The treatments (in vivo flooding, imaginal flooding, and no treatment) are levels of the factor. Which of the following might contribute to between-treatments variance? Check all that apply. Systematic differences caused by in vivo flooding being more effective than imaginal flooding. Flaws in the tool used to measure the pretreatment and posttreatment severity of the arachnophobia. Individual differences in the resistance of a person with arachnophobia to any form of treatment.

1. Which of the following is needed to meet criteria for criterion A for PTSD? Directly experiencing a traumatic event(s). Witnessing, in person, a traumatic event as it occured to someone else. Learning that a traumatic event occurred to a close family member or friend. Any of the above could meet criteria for criterion A for PTSD. 2. While there are several benefits to adopting a dimensional model of classification for psychopathology, which of the following demonstrates a weakness of dimensional models? Cut-off points in dimensions are often arbitrary. Dimensions are less exact than categories. Dimensions don't capture the complexity of mental disorders. Dimensions don't provide information about severity. 3. Which of the following is most accurate regarding genetics and psychological disorders? Psychological disorders are complete genetic and inherited. Genetics do not matter, as psychological disorders are entirely explained by environmental causes. We do not inherit a psychological disorder, but rather inherit a genetic predisposition that puts us at risk for the disorder. A specific gene for each psychological disorder has been identified. 4. What is a compulsion? An anxiety disorder. Reassurance seeking. Action engaged in because it is enjoyable. Action engaged in to reduce anxiety associated with an obsession. 5. Which of the following best reflects cognitive-behavioral therapy? A client presents with irritability and angry outbursts toward women. The therapist works with the client to help bring repressed memories of negative interactions with their mother into conscious awareness. A client presents with alcohol abuse. A therapist has the client smell an alcoholic beverage and then immediately shows them an aversive image. This is intended to elicit a negative response to alcohol, and hopefully decrease its intake. A client presents with depression. The psychiatrist prescribes them an SSRI. A client presents with social phobia. The therapist works with the client to challenge distorted cognitions (e.g., "No one will ever like me") and gradually exposes them to anxiety provoking social situations.
