Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system of genetically predisposed individuals reacts abnormally to the presence of gluten in food. It has been discovered that persons with celiac disease have both abnormally high permeability of the intestinal wall and they also have certain other abnormalities in their small intestines. The most obvious treatment for celiac disease is to eliminate gluten from the diet, but there are a lot of other promising treatment strategies. What might some of the these other strategies be and how do they compare to just removing gluten from the diet?
