2) Two Point Threshold. This test examines the difference between detecting one or two points of skin being stimulated simultaneously. Forceps are used to spread two points of the skin simultaneously and the subject can detect this as two separate points or sometimes they feel it as a single touch at one point. The result will vary depending on the areas of the body the you are testing and the size of the receptive fields in these areas. You can read about receptive fields on page 515 in your textbook. Predict if you would expect a better ability to detect two separate points of contact in your index finger or on the back of your neck? Briefly explain why this is your prediction. Will the receptive fields in your index finger be smaller or larger than those on the back of your neck? Will there be more sensory neurons associated with your index finger or the back of your neck?
